While Lake Michigan never officially freezes over, this was the closest it got back in 2014. Now 2020 the temperature has hardly stayed below freezing, let alone frozen the Lake. While it does make life a bit easier, without any real snow we are left with nothing but dreary gray. Certainly no photo inspiration surrounding Big Red this year. Maybe January will bring winter, but I'm not counting on it this year.

I hope you will take a minute to view this in Large.

The imposing architecture of Castle Howard was constructed from 1699 for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, and took over one.

Sadly, much of the original house did not survive into the modern day due to extensive fire damage in 1940. A large amount of the building had to be restored and has since been brought back to life via the long and tireless project of restoration that ensued. The east wing however remains a shell.

The survival of the house today is owed to George Howard’s efforts in the 20th century. After the Howard family suffered devastating losses during the Second World War, the estate was expected to be divided and sold. George returned from war wounded and miraculously undertook the task of rebuilding and restoring the house however, in 1952 opening the estate to the public.

It was an incredible atmosphere on the dune overlooking the big Lake. Just above freezing and the snow clinging everywhere. There was a mist at the shoreline about 25 feet below the dune.

This wonderful little cottage was in the highest elevations of Wales. It was truly off the grid with a generator, water from a spring and an oil burning Aga stove. Every morning Mark would push the begrudging sheep out of that little front entrance so he could stumble over to the blue door you see and get the generator started to warm the freezing home and water. Our version of roughing it, but what spectacular views. Great memories shared with Andy.

Late in the day at Chatsworth

Some may say I should have removed the duck since it is distracting, but I felt that would be unfair since he belonged there. However, it took ages to remove all of the ugly cars that they have park right in front of the great house. None of these historic sites ever show the slightest respect for photographers or the long view. Isn't it tiresome?

Tiger lilies also known around here as ditch lilies were not seen much in our area in recent years due to heavy mowing along the country roads. Cutbacks in county funds have reduced the mowing and I have been delighted to find them dotted here and there.

I have wanted a winter shoot at this lighthouse for a long time now. Finally thanks to our friends John and Carla who generously shared their up north cabin with us, I was able to get over to this site in the winter. Even the weather cooperated beyond all expectations. I will try not to exhaust my contacts with endless variations of this wonderful day...although it is tempting...:-)))

"Let Pendragon do what he can

Eden will run where Eden ran"

A Pendragon legend states Uther attempted to divert the River Eden for the purpose of forming a moat around the castle but was unsuccessful.

Pendragon Castle resides in the Vale of Mallerstang near Outhgill in Cumbria along the banks of the River Eden. Its location on a raised hill consists of a single ruinous tower. While legends link this castle to Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur, the structure was built in the 12th century, more than 500 years after the time of King Arthur.

A notable owner of the castle was Sir Hugh de Morville, Lord of Westmorland, who was one of four knights who murdered Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1170.

An eagle can spot an object as small as a rabbit from a distance of almost two miles-and pick it out from the background. On the other hand, a man would have to look through a pair of powerful binoculars to see the same thing. That's just the beginning, of the incredible facts of the eagle's eye.
